Trade Bait: Winners and Losers

August 1, 2006 · Filed Under Trade Bait · Comment

This year the non-waiver trade deadline came to an end with a flurry of deals before the mid-afternoon deadline.  Much different than last season’s boredom.   Also, kudos again to MLB for moving back the time of the deadline from midnight to mid-afternoon a couple years back.

Since the deals came on fast and furious I decided to just breakdown the winners and losers of the past few days.  Below is a breakdown with no particular ranking.

Winners   Losers
Royals   Mets
Loaded up on arms and power bat.   Lot power bat, arm to injury
Braves   Nationals
Two arms that have late game experience that solidifies the pen.   Although they improved their offense, trade season will be a failure if Soriano isn’t resigned.
Reds   Phillies
Loaded up on bullpen arms.  Gave up too much to Nats though.   Salary dumps all over with little in return.
Yankees   Red Sox
Long term RF bat, a decent rotation arm, and a good bat off the bench.   No moves in reaction to the Yankees moves
Mariners   Orioles
Actually got a prospect for Guardado, then got powerbat for stretch   Did not unload any players in preparation for next season.
Devil Rays   Blue Jays
Continued to get quality prospects in return for players not in their future.   Why not add someone like Craig Wilson to replace Hillenbrand?
Twins   White Sox
Could’ve used more power, but unloaded Lohse, that’s enough.   Overpaid for relief help.
Dodgers   Cubs
More talent throughout the infield now than you can shake a stick at.  Got Maddux and got rid of Odalis Perez.   Cesar Izturis addition ensures the Cubs will have the least productive middle infield for years to come
Pirates   Rockies
They actually got something for Kip Wells?!   Now overloaded with lefty arms in the pen.  But what else?
Cardinals   Diamondbacks
Belliard for second base is good, Weaver for the rotation is bad.  Unless Duncan can work his magic.   Only a game and a half out of the wildcard and nothing to help the rotation.
Padres   Giants
Filled the offensive hole at third base.  But Todd Walker is not much of a fill.   Can a slumping Hillenbrand be considered an improvement?
Tigers   Astros
Got lefty bat they needed and good clubhouse guy.   Clemens supposedly said “do something”, they did nothing after Huff.
    Athletics
Needed offensive help, didn’t get it.
    Angels
    See above
    Marlins
    Indecisiveness.
