Mets’ lineup packed with….what?????

Recently I read an article entitled, “Mets Lineup Packed with Punch”.  This automatically made me roll my eyes.  Then again, it was on ESPN.com, so I read on.

The article went on to rave about the lineup of the New York Mets.  This being Baseball Opinion, I couldn’t resist to put my two cents in about the Mets’ lineup.

1) Jose Reyes – Legit five-tool player he brings speed to the top of the lineup and some power as well.

2) Paul LoDuca – Good on-base percentage for the #2 spot.  But he will be 35 this season and those who know catchers, know that’s not good.

3) Carlos Beltran – Another five-tool talent on the way up.  Great for the #3 spot in the order.

4) Carlos Delgado – Great cleanup hitter.  But he will be 35 soon and his .361 OBP in 2006 was his lowest since 1997.

5) David Wright – Great potential.  Hopefully the second half last season a fluke though.

6) Shawn Green – After under-performing in LA, he was shipped to Arizona.  After under-performing in Arizona, he was shipped to the Mets.  Does anyone see reality, or his Toronto statistics still?

7) Moises Alou – The fact that his at-bats went from 601 to 427 to 345 over the past three seasons say anything?

8) Javier Valentin – Although he is 37 and strikes out, around 20 homers out of the 8th spot in the lineup is pretty good.

Sure, I’ll admit that the Mets’ lineup is good, very good if their lineup doesn’t start showing its age.  But to list it as the best in baseball?

Then again this writer thinks the Cubs have the second best lineup.  (Think Cesar Izturis and Arlington-inflated Mark DeRosa and cringe.)

He also listed the Boston Red Sox as the Cold Plate Special, a team I believe will have one of the best lineups in baseball.  But then again, he listed both New York teams in his top three and shares his last name with the Mets’ stadium.
