Rookies to Look For: Lou Marson

The Cleveland Indians are getting an extended look at one of the pieces that they received in the Cliff Lee trade with Philadelphia.  Catcher Lou Marson was highly regarded last season in eyes of Philly execs, but this season they were open to trading the backstop if it meant adding a major piece to their rotation.  First he was rumored to be in a deal for Toronto Blue Jays starter, but the team ended up trading for the much-needed Cliff Lee.

Lou can hit, he has a strong history of hitting for average and drawing walks (didn’t have a BB% below 11% in the upper minors until the trade to the Indians).  In fact, he’s an on-base machine.  Last season at Double-A Lou not only led the Phillies’ minor leagues in OBP, he also led all of Double-A in OBP.  The biggest knock against him offensively is his relative lack of power.  Marson had only two home runs in Triple-A, but he should still hit his share of doubles.  There’s a few shots of his hitting on YouTube.

The scouting report on his defense is also positive.  He has a quick release with good accuracy.  Lou also has drawn raves about his ability to handle a pitching staff.

With Victor Martinez now gone, Lou only has to battle Kelly Shoppach for the starting catching gig in Cleveland.
