Royal Shakeup

September 12, 2008 · Filed Under General Opinion

On tuesday the Kansas City Royals decided to start to shake things up, even before the off-season came.  General Manager Dayton Moore fired Scouting Director Deric Ladnier and replaced him with Assistant GM J.J. Picollo.

Ladnier, who had been in the position since August of 2000, hadn’t brought in the talent through his tenure that was expected of his position.  Sure, the team has drafted players like Billy Butler, Alex Gordon, and Mike Moustakas during his tenure, but those players were relative easy picks.  It’s the lack of latter round prospects excelling in the organization, the ‘diamonds in the rough’ that a scouting director can hang his hat on, that has made him look bad.

Although the Royals had, as touted by many, a very good draft, the team’s minor league system is relatively barren of propects.  It makes you wonder if Dayton was listening a little closer to Picollo at this year’s draft and that the success of the draft has lead him to do away with Ladnier. Then again, Dayton’s always been closer to Picollo as he was with Moore in Atlanta before he brought Picollo over to the Royals with him in 2006.

With the Royals expected to be very busy this off-season, Dayton probably wanted to clean house before it started and get things settled.  Just keep an eye on how things go over the next season, especially the draft.
