Things are Wild in Mississippi
On Friday night the Carolina Mudcats and the Mississippi Braves squared off what could have been the final game of the Southern League Championship finals. The Mudcats needed only one win to take the title, but the Braves had other ideas. After heading into extra innings the Mudcats pulled ahead in the top of the 11th, only to be countered by top Braves prospect Jordan Schaffer’s home run in the bottom of the 11th. The game continued on until the bottom of the 14th inning. The Braves loaded the bases and catcher J.C. Boscan hit the game winning grand slam….er….single. Boscan rounded first and was pummeled by his celebrating teammates so much that he didn’t even make it home.
Last night each team squared off again in a game that would come down to a 2-2 tie after the Mudcats Scott Cousins led off the ninth with his third postseason homer and second in as many nights. The game went into the bottom of the tenth inning. But it ended there as second baseman J.C. Holt raced home on a throwing error, winning the game and the Southern League Championship for the the Mississippi Braves.
What a wild ride! It would’ve been the talk of ESPN for days, if it wasn’t Double-A ball.
Note: Kala Ka’aihue was named the MVP, hitting .364 in the postseason, knocking out three homers in the finals. Know that last name Royals fans?
