Sabean Likely to Stay for 2009

September 21, 2008 · Filed Under General Opinion

For those of you that have read the articles about the Giants on this website before, my mild disdain for GM Brian Sabean is obvious.  His recent over-reliance on well aged veterans and lite-hitting outfielders has finally made this team hit rock bottom this season.  With a farm system devoid of good positional prospects and the roster filled with bad signings, the Giants cannot be saved anytime soon.

On October 1st, William Neukom will take over as the Giants’ managing general partner.  According to Henry Schulmann of SFGate, it sounds likely that fans in San Francisco will have to live through the torture of at least another year of Sabean at GM.  Doesn’t that just make you jump for joy?

So what will he do this off-season?  Let’s see, he could…..

  • Make Rich Aurilia the Giants’ version of Tim Wakefield and sign him to a contract with continous options.
  • Sign Tony Clark for first base.
  • Pick up Vizquel’s option for 2009
  • Sign Craig Counsel for third base.
  • Sign Orlando Hernandez for the rotation.
  • Sign Todd Jones for the bullpen.

Those four moves would give them six players with an average age in 2009 of 39.66.  They might need to sign a Russ Springer (40), or Kenny Rogers (44) to get them over that 40-year-old hump.
