Brewers, Your Time is Now

September 23, 2008 · Filed Under General Opinion

The Milwaukee Brewers best chance to pull ahead of the New York Mets for the NL Wild Card is now.  They are about to enter a stretch against a limping Pittsburgh Pirates team that is vital to their playoff hopes.  Meanwhile, the Mets will have to face the Chicago Cubs over the next three games.   Here’s the matchup over the next three games:

Jeff Karstens (1.39 WHIP)  vs. Dave Bush (1.12 Second Half WHIP)

Paul Maholm (3.68 ERA) vs. Ben Sheets (2.98 ERA)

Zach Duke (1.59 WHIP) vs. C.C. Sabathia (Need I say more?)

Things will only get harder for the Brew Crew after their Pittsburgh stint.  They will then go to Chicago to face Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly, Jason Marquis, and the Cubbie offiense.  Meanwhile, the Mets will be off to Florida, which is no walk in the park either.  Although they are likely to be eliminated from the playoffs soon, the Marlins won’t be giving up at the end of the season.  These last three games may be a wash, but the Brewers have a chance pull ahead of the Mets over the next three days.

Hopefully, for the Brewers, Craig Counsell will only be used as a defensive replacement.
