Rookies to Look For: Ryan Hanigan
Cincinnati Reds rookie catcher Ryan Hanigan has never been a top 10 prospect, he wasn’t even drafted out of college. But the Reds signed him after seeing him in the Cape Cod League and he hasn’t let them down.
Through 558 games in the minors, Hanigan has hit for a .294 average, with a .383 OBP. He’s drawn 245 walks, while striking out just 248 times. The large difference between his batting average and on-base percentage can be seen throughout the minors and is a good sign for his ability to succeed in the majors. Ryan doesn’t have a power bat, but has shown the ability to hit for a high average and draw walks. Hanigan talks about his bat in an article by Tim Evearitt on Chattanoogan.com:
“I don’t ever think I’m a home run hitter,” he said. “I just try to put good swings on the ball. I’m a catcher and I’m here for the pitchers. But hopefully I can add some offense, too.”
Defensively, he has drawn some good remarks from pitchers and was ranked as the top defensive catcher in the International League this season.
Although Walt Jocketty may want to make a splash this off-season by trading for a catcher with a bigger name tied to him, like Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Victor Martinez, he should feel somewhat comfortable with the fall-back of Ryan Hanigan behind the plate.
