It’s Just Speculation: Delmon Young to San Diego
About a year ago, the Minnesota Twins traded for the young, but immensely talented Delmon Young in a block buster trade that helped the Tampa Bay Rays get to the World Series. But Young underperformed last season and is far from reaching his potential. However, the Twins are geared to win now and may not be able to wait for Young’s slow growth.
The Twins are also in need of a third baseman. The hot corner has seen the power bats of Nick Punto, Mike Lamb, and Brian Buscher all too often over the past couple seasons. The team may be enticed to trade Young and go forward with an outfield of Carlos Gomez, Denard Span, and Michael Cuddyer in order to get an good bat to play third.
John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectushas reported that the Twins are supposedly interested in dealing Young to the Padres for Kevin Kouzmanoff. The deal would make sense for both sides if something can be worked out. The deal would allow the Padres to move Chase Headley, who’s better defensively anyway, to third base. The Padres are also in a rebuilding mode and can wait for Young to develop into the offensive force he’s expected to be.
The Twins would get a young, low cost option for third base, improving their offense along the way. Just getting Kouz out of PETCO and into a better lineup should improve his offensive production. Also, although previous reports on Kevin’s defense have not been that great, his statistics say that it has improved. His fielding percentage went up 42 points from 2007′s .932 and his range factor increased to 2.64 from 2.38. Additionally, Kevin’s errors were cut in half, from 22 to 11, even though he played in 18 more games in 2008. He even turned nearly three times the amount of double plays in 2008 than he did in 2007.
But the Padres would likely have to throw something else in to level out this deal. Even though Young didn’t have a good season in ’08, he still has immense potential.
Although there’s been rumors of a trade like this, it’s doubtful something like this will happen, but it’s interesting to ponder.
