Being GM of the San Diego Padres

November 23, 2008 · Filed Under General Opinion

Evan, over at MVN Outsider, has a pretty good series of articles entitled, “Being the GM.”  In them he does as he says:

This series is predicated on educated guesses, past history of the team/general manager, rumors that have been out there for a while, and actions that I feel could be taken. This exercise is me playing GM to inspire conversation and a new way of approaching things. Moves that I complete as previous GMs of teams will carry over here. Trades only include principal, significant players.

One of the main ones that caught my eye was about he San Diego Padres.  In it he suggests moving Khalil Greene to the Chicago White Sox for starter Clayton Richard.  He goes on to suggest that they sign Mike Hampton, Trevor Hoffman (re-sign), Dennys Reyes, Greg Zaun, David Ross, and Mark Loretta.  Then he believes that they should trade for Julio Lugo.

This article was written on October 6th, so it doesn’t take into account the probable drastic cut in the Padres payroll that is expected or the fact that Jake Peavy is likely to be traded now.  Bit it is still an interesting set of moves.

I still think that Alexei Ramirez will give Manager Ozzie Guillen fits over his defensive play at short and GM Kenny Williams knows that.  Greene is a powerful hitter that might blossom in a new environment and away from spacious PETCO Park.  Whereas Greene’s replacement, Lugo, would be an ideal fit at the top of the lineup for the Padres.  Although Boston would love to just dump his salary and the market for Lugo hasn’t been that great, you’d think the Red Sox could get a little more than Will Venable for him.  Not much more though.

Loretta would be a perfect fit.  He could take over if Matt Antonelli or Edgar Gonzalez faulter, or he could be a useful bat off the bench if one of them performs well enough.

From the sounds of it, the Padres look to be going with internal options in the pen and catcher though with their now limited payroll.

Hampton would also be a perfect fit, especially after his agent has been saying that he wants just a one year deal with no options.  Hampton basically wants to rebuild his value next year and land one more big contract after that.  Where else would be better to rebuild your value?

This will be Hampton’s first free agent contract since the Colorado debacle…..wonder if the Padres will “have good schools” this time?
