Giants Sign Affeldt
In a head-scratcher, the San Francisco Giants signed lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt to a two-year contract. It was a pretty good deal for the Giants as they signed one of the better relievers on the market. In Cincinnati’s small Great American Ballpark, Affeldt had a 3.33 ERA in 74 appearances. He’ll become the team’s top lefty out of an ugly bullpen.
But for Affeldt, it was an odd signing. The Giants are at least a year or two from contention, they simply don’t have the offense to make a push. Affeldt could have spent the next two seasons with a possible contender. He even had time to let the offers come in. Teams like his current team, the Reds, as well as the Cardinals, Indians, Mets, and possibly the Braves have been interested in him.
Maybe Brian Sabean assured Jeremy and his agent that the Giants will spend a bunch of money on veteran hitters this offseason. Like Richie Sexson, Damion Easley, Craig Counsell, Rich Aurilia, and Moises Alou…..
